The river doesn't move at an average

What happens when pollution arrives in pulses?

Daily river data reveal why a quiet sample can miss what high water carries downstream.

01 · BEGIN WITH THE FINDING

A river has a timetable

A concentration tells how much material is present in a volume of water. Flux tells how much moves past a point over time. During high flow, both the concentration and the amount transported can change. A 2026 Science analysis assembled daily river estimates and found pulse enrichment associated with rainfall-driven high flows across discharge representing about 70% of global freshwater flow. That percentage describes the study dataset—not the share of drinking water that is unsafe.

02 · FOLLOW THE MECHANISM

A snapshot can miss the event

Sampling a river on a quiet day may underdescribe episodic transport. Sampling only during one storm can also misrepresent the year. The research makes timing visible: monitoring frequency and the relationship between sampling and discharge affect what a program can detect. It does not identify the source of every particle or trace each piece from a package, textile, tire or other source to the ocean. Source attribution remains a separate local investigation.

03 · KEEP THE CLAIM BOUNDED

The transferable question

Nitrogen, phosphorus, sediment, PFAS, pesticides and plastic particles can all move with water, but they do not behave identically. The microplastic result cannot be copied onto those other materials. What transfers is the question: when did the water move, and what did it carry then? Future changes in extreme rainfall could alter transport, but this study should not be recast as proof that climate change caused every historical pulse it measured.
